How to Run a Scarecrow Trail Downtown This Fall (Free Template Included)

A scarecrow trail gets families into shops on your Main Street. Here's how to plan one, hide the scarecrows, & set it up with a free template.

September 30, 2026

Every fall, scarecrows start turning up in shop windows and on street corners, and families start asking where to find the rest of them. That question is the whole opportunity. A scarecrow trail turns a seasonal decoration into a reason to walk your district and step inside every shop on the list.

Lots of communities are running one this fall. If you have been meaning to join in, here is how to plan it, and a free template so you are not starting from a blank page.

What Is a Scarecrow Trail?

A scarecrow trail is a scavenger hunt with a fall costume on. Participating businesses each hide a scarecrow somewhere in their shop. Families get a list of stops, visit each one, find the scarecrow, and snap a selfie with it to check in. Find enough of them and you earn a prize.

The important detail is where the scarecrow lives. A scarecrow on the sidewalk gets a photo and a wave. A small scarecrow tucked on a shelf behind the candles gets a family through the door, looking around the whole store.

Why a Scarecrow Trail Works for Downtown Foot Traffic

It works for the same reason kids love hide and seek. There is a clear goal, it takes about an afternoon, and nobody needs to buy anything to play. That low bar is what gets people to shops they have walked past for years.

It is also an easy yes for your businesses. You are asking them to hide one object and say hello to the people who come looking. No discount required, no extra staff, no special hours.

And it gives you something most fall events do not: a list. Everyone who registers to play is someone you can invite to your holiday events a few weeks later.

How to Plan a Scarecrow Trail in Five Steps

  1. Sign up your stops. Ten to twenty businesses is plenty. Aim for a mix that is close enough to walk, and include a few shops that do not usually get family traffic.
  2. Set the hiding rules. Inside the shop, visible without opening anything, and at a height a seven-year-old can spot. Ask each business to move theirs once a week so repeat visitors have something new to find.
  3. Have people check in with a selfie. A photo of them with the scarecrow is how people prove they found it. They take it on their phone to check in, so nobody can finish the trail from the couch. Every check-in also lands in a photo feed, which hands you a month of social posts full of happy faces inside your shops.
  4. Decide what finishing earns. A badge for the first find, a bigger one for finding them all, and a prize drawing for finishers is enough. Small prizes donated by the participating shops work well.
  5. Print a poster. A poster generated by Proxi with a QR code in every participating window tells people the trail exists and lets them join on the spot.

Scarecrow Trail Ideas to Make It Your Own

  • Let each business dress its own scarecrow. The bakery's scarecrow wears an apron. The bookstore's is reading. It costs nothing, gives owners something to show off, and makes every selfie different.
  • Add a bonus scarecrow outdoors. Put one full-size scarecrow in your plaza or park as an extra stop. It gives families an obvious place to start and a photo everyone wants.
  • Turn on a leaderboard. Families like seeing their name climb, and businesses like seeing which stop is getting the most finds.
  • Give bonus points. Extra credit for bringing a friend or sharing the trail gives your most eager players a way to recruit for you.

A Free Scarecrow Trail Template to Start From

We built a Find the Hidden Object template in Proxi for exactly this. It comes with the pieces already in place: photo check-ins, badges for the first find and for finding them all, a leaderboard, and a photo feed. You pick the template, add your businesses by searching for them or importing a spreadsheet, and share the link or QR code.

It is free to set up and test, so you can build your trail and try it with a few people before you decide anything.

Start Small and Start Soon

You do not need forty stops or a big prize budget. Ten shops, ten scarecrows, and one poster is a real event. Fall is short, so pick your stops this week, hide the scarecrows next week, and let your community do what it already wants to do this time of year: wander downtown and see what is new.
